The Lab Starts Before the Car Rolls In
When Ruben Parra first began teaching at the college level, he wanted to focus on one thing: teaching students how to work on cars. Student learning outcomes felt like paperwork standing between him and the shop. Years later, his approach has completely changed.
Ruben now starts with the outcome and works backward. He identifies exactly what students should be able to understand or perform by the end of the lesson, then builds the instruction and lab experience that will help them get there.
That preparation matters most in diagnostic labs.
Before students ever touch the vehicle, Ruben confirms that it operates correctly. Then he creates the fault or testing condition, completes the entire diagnostic process himself, and verifies that the results match what he expects students to find.
Only then is the vehicle ready for class.
Over time, he has developed a list of dependable vehicles for specific lessons. When he teaches ignition systems, for example, he knows which five or six vehicles will produce the results he needs. The lab procedures are already built around them, which makes future preparation much easier.
Creating that system took time. Ruben estimates that it required three full semesters before his labs worked the way he wanted. The alternative is pulling in any available vehicle and hoping it produces the expected result. When it does not, students can become frustrated or leave the lab more confused than when they started.
Careful preparation gives students the chance to experience that moment every instructor wants to see: the test results match the lesson, the diagnosis begins to make sense, and the student says, “I get it.” The strongest labs may happen in the shop, but they begin with a clear outcome and an instructor willing to test every step first.
Test the Lab Before Your Students Do
Complete every diagnostic lab exactly as a student will experience it. Verify that the vehicle, fault, equipment, instructions, and expected results all work together before class begins. Keep a simple record of which vehicles work best for each lesson, including the fault created, the tools required, the expected readings, and any setup notes.
